Alumni Past Events 2011
HR Group Knowledge Exchange
Nearly 40 alumni who are professionals in the HR sector returned to Bath to take part in a Knowledge Exchange Networking event at the end of March.Professor Juani Swart and Dr Nick Kinnie hosted the one day to examine the impact of employee attitudes on performance with these senior practitioners. Our alumni showcased their best practice case-studies via poster sessions during a relaxed and information networking lunch.
Pam Rawlins (Pamela Rawlins Associates) and Chris Hills (Natural History Museum) shared findings from current and previous research projects and a team of final year project students from our BSc in Business Administration degree presented their analysis of graduate recruitment. Some of the posters can be viewed via our LinkedIn Group; if you are interested in learning more about our research or joining the HR Alumni Group, please email us.
Whisky Galore
MSc and MBA students were delighted to be invited to meet William Grant Distilleries when they came to visit the School of Management recently. After listening to the inside story of how they turned round their world-renowned Glenfiddich brand presented by Global Marketing Manager Gary Keogh (who completed his own MBA at Bath in 2008), the tasting began.
The Glenfiddich UK Brand Ambassador led the students in a tutored tasting of 4 fine single malts of varying ages, with flavours of pear and oak, apple and cinnamon, honey and vanilla. The story of Glenfiddich is fascinating and provoked a lot of questions, which Jamie Milne answered with his encyclopaedic knowledge of whiskies. Comments ranged from “toffee and spices” to the less realistic “it smells a lot less alcoholic than the others”!
Our thanks to Gary and Jamie – and the students would like you to visit again soon.

Max Clifford’s Secrets of Success
PR guru and publicist Max Clifford shared his top tips for success at the second joint UK business schools event in London’s prestigious Grand Connaught Rooms on 22 February.
Nearly 150 BBA, BAF and IMML alumni came to listen to his views on how to succeed today and afterwards shared their own success stories over drinks.
Thank you to our alumni
We are very grateful to our alumni who came to share their experience and advice with our undergraduate final year students and MSc students at the Guildhall, when Rhodri Jenkins (BAF 2008), Charles Stanton (MSc 2008) and Will Sargeant (BBA 2008) shared their advice on how to survive the final term and get that all-important job. We also thank our MBA alumni who returned to campus to talk to current MBA students about consulting and final projects. Alumni from Accenture, IBM, West-HR and Salt Global, representing the whole range of consulting companies, from blue chip management consultants to recent start-up, shared their knowledge and answered questions before chatting more informally to the students over refreshments.
MBA alumni Miguel Diaz, Chris Jones and Jenny Bower gave their time to talk about final projects and Steve Chadwick, Tom O’Connor, Chris Coles and Andrew McIntyre grilled the students in mock interviews – a really valuable experience before they start the pursuit of their post-MBA job.
First joint UK business schools event: “The Power of the Global Brand”
The inaugural event of a new joint initiative by UK business schools took place at the University of Westminster under the ABS (Association of Business Schools) banner in January. Richard Learwood, Global Brand Director of Procter & Gamble entertained alumni from Bath, Henley, Ashridge, Westminster, Kingston, Oxford Brookes, Queen Mary, Nottingham, Cardiff and several other business schools with stories of how to build brands and seize marketing opportunities, the influence of social networks and using late stage differentiation with your products.
This initiative was started to offer our alumni better events – more high profile speakers and venues – by joining resources to counteract current university funding cuts.
High society in Hong Kong
The rooftop bar was the stunning venue for the latest happy hour gathering of our Hong Kong alumni. Mr Gavin Maggs, Deputy Director of Development, welcomed new graduates and brought up-to-date news from the University of Bath. He is visiting Hong Kong and Malaysia to further engage alumni who still have a valuable role to play in the University, emphasising that our relationship is life-long.
As ever, thank you to the Hong Kong Bath Alumni Chapter team, whose efforts and commitment are always much appreciated. For further details of the chapter, email Hong Kong Chapter.

Our thanks to chapter leader Janet Tseng for organising this dinner and, with co-leader Vincent Ong, for promoting the Bath alumni network. You can join the University of Bath Alumni in Taiwan group on Facebook and see more photos here.
Shanghai
Professor Meyer also hosted a very well attended dinner in Shanghai, where nearly 50 Bath alumni came to meet each other and welcome new graduates into the alumni network on their return home.
Chapter leader Irene Cheng worked hard to make the event such a success and we thank her for her continuing support and engagement with the University of Bath. More photos.
