Bath Marketing Alumni Group

Nigel Sharrocks

Alumni from across the University met in London to hear the inside story from Nigel Sharrocks, CEO of Aegis Media.  Nigel was delighted to be introduced as himself, rather than Mr Fiona Bruce (he is married to the television news reader and host of many BBC programmes) and shamelessly name-dropped as he outlined his career path from graduating at Bath to his current senior position.  His time at Warner Bros (Harry Potter, The Matrix to name but a few) was particularly interesting – he delighted in having to watch a film in the morning, have lunch at The Ivy and then watch another film in the afternoon.

The Group also enjoyed hearing about “My Best Day in Marketing” from Louise Wisson (Campaign Manager at The Wine Society) who brought a (sadly empty) bottle of Petrus, and Ian McCaig (ex-Google and founder of QuBit Digital).

The Group is looking forward to the next event, when Mark Palmer of Green & Black’s will be our guest speaker.  If you are a marketing professional and would like to join this group, please email alumni@management.bath.ac.uk.

Alumni come together to discuss local economy

Holburne museum, Bath

MBA alumni living and working in South West England joined with Executive MBA students at the recently refurbished Holburne Museum in Bath for the fourth meeting of the South West MBA Network recently.

The event took a different form to usual as the group moved into break out sessions to discuss a range of issues affecting local businesses. Dr Bruce Rayton, Director of the Bath MBA, opened the evening by giving the group an overview of the School’s strategy for the MBA programmes. He reflected on the importance of MBA alumni and events like this to the ongoing success of the programme.

Dr Rayton stayed to join the breakout groups and was joined by Professor Juani Swart and Maggi Preddy (MBA Admissions Manager) who enjoyed the opportunity to discuss topical issues with the alumni.

Thanks go to Iris Eiting (Full Time MBA, 2008), Georgie Lack (Modular MBA, 2009) and Jon Webb-Peploe (Full Time MBA, 2000) for leading the breakout discussions. Iris’s group discussed the challenges SMEs face when attempting to secure supply contracts with the government, Georgie’s group focused on the effects of a recession on training, coaching and learning within organisations while Jon led a discussion designed to identify the key stages and important lessons for start-ups.

Bath Alumni Marketing Group – 6 key lessons from the BBC

Hong Kong chapter seafood dinner

The Head of Marketing for BBC ONE, BBC Film, BBC Drama and BBC HD shared her top rules for success during a lively and entertaining presentation to our Marketing alumni.  Hosted by the SMMT in their historic London headquarters, Reemah Sakaan, (BSc Business Administration graduate, 1997) gave a fascinating insight into the world of the BBC.  We now know why BBC Three was rebranded in pink …

Following Reemah, Dr Pete Nuttall and a group of his marketing students from the University of Bath discussed how the current MSc in Marketing is changing, how alumni can get involved with our marketing academics and students and the benefits this brings to our graduates.  Final year BSc in Business Administration students Neda Kostadinova and Silviya Dencheva summarised their final year project’s findings on marketing the University and MSc in Marketing student Kenny Diack talked about what students want – and it seems they want our alumni!

If you would like to get involved in this group, with our students or with the University generally, please email us for more details.

Alumni Dinner in Moscow

Dr Alan Butt-Philip, lecturer from the School of Management, hosted a dinner for our alumni in Moscow in June.  Dr Butt-Philip is visiting Russia and thoroughly enjoyed meeting alumni at central Moscow’s Uzbekistan restaurant.

Graduates from across the University enjoyed catching up on news from Bath and meeting each other, some for the first time.  They are keen to repeat the event and hope to bring more Bath alumni together in the future.  If you are interested in attending, please email the Alumni Office.
