It is very tempting to study entrepreneurship and come away thinking that if you just follow the plan, everything will work out. Business (like life) is rife with contingencies. The true test of a great business person is their ability to respond to these with intelligence, creativity and integrity.

MBA Business Plan Competition

Abbey Santander

The Bath MBA has long been renowned for the ‘Entrepreneurship in Action’ project (formerly called the Claverton Project). This course provides students with the opportunity to encounter the real-life process of launching an entrepreneurial enterprise. The course culminates in a pitch to a panel of experienced entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. The winners are awarded £2000 and the runners up are awarded £1000 prize. The current supporters (2007-2010) are Abbey Santander.

Undergraduate Business Plan Competition

BP Biofuels

The final year undergraduates have the option of selecting the ‘New Venture Creation’ unit as part of their degree. This unit provides students with the opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial skills by pursuing their own business idea and writing a business plan. The three best business plans are awarded a prize of £250 each. The current provider (2009-12) of the prize is BP Biofuels.

BANTER Business Plan Competition

The BANTER business plan competition is open to all University of Bath undergraduates, postgraduates and alumni from 2006 onwards, giving them the unique opportunity to develop a business plan with the help of a mentor and win £1000.

Knowledge West Enterprise Awards

The Knowledge West Enterprise Awards recognise and reward the best business ideas and new enterprises by students, staff and alumni from the annual business plan competitions of the six Higher Education Institute (HEI) partners within Knowledge West (Bath Spa University, Royal Agricultural College, University of Bath, , University of Bristol, University of Gloucestershire, University of the West of England).

University of Bath student Alex Simpson was awarded the runner-up prize for Best Student Business Plan in 2008. Alex Simpson was in his fourth year of BSc (Hons.) in General Architectural Studies. He received a prize of £2,500 for the development of StudentPranks.com, an online student community which allows students to share their amusing video clips.
