Overview

Given the popularity of the IMML programme and the quality of the applicants, the admissions process is highly competitive. Offers are made not just on academic grades but on a range of criteria, including personal statement, references, academic and personal profile, work experience and all round suitability for the degree.

Personal statements

Your personal statement should demonstrate a genuine interest in Modern Languages and Management Studies, expressed through enthusiasm and knowledge about certain social, political or cultural aspects, as well as awareness and enthusiasm for the field of Management. It should be well written with no careless mistakes and we encourage you to avoid anything too formulaic or too general in scope. We are interested in you and the reasons why you want to study on the programme in International Management and Modern Languages.

A Levels

Typical Offer: A2: AAB for German, AAB for French, AAA for Spanish

In exceptional circumstances, we may make a slightly lower offer (typically ABB) for IMML with German.

Essential

Desirable

Grade A in the target language is the main specification, and the combination of other subjects is fairly flexible. Please contact Admissions if you would like to discuss your subject choices. Evidence of a good command of English and of numeracy skills is essential.

Languages which are intended for non-native speakers are not normally acceptable when taken by native speakers of that language

International Baccalaureate

Typical offers are:

IB: 35 for German, 35 for French, 37 for Spanish (including bonus points) with Higher Level 6 in the relevant language.

Standard Level Mathematics at Grade 5 or higher and Standard Level English at Grade 5 or equivalent are also required.

In exceptional circumstances, we may make a slightly lower offer (typically 33) for IMML with German.

Non-academic criteria

While academic achievement is an important part of considering your application, we place a strong emphasis on non-academic attributes. Not only do we look for high achievers academically, but also those who demonstrate a wide range of outside interests and a well developed, balanced personality. The significance of these interests may be enhanced by a gap year. The referee's report also plays a major part in the evaluation of your application.

Other UK qualifications

The full range of qualifications will be considered where appropriate (Diplomas, BTEC Nationals, Access and Foundation Courses). Please contact the IMML Admissions Tutor to discuss your particular qualifications. A high level of competence in English must be apparent.

Non-UK qualifications

If you are applying with non-UK qualifications, offers made will reflect the equivalent AAB requirement at A level. International Baccalaureate, French Baccalaureate, and the German Abitur are welcome. If you would like to discuss your particular qualifications, please contact the IMML Admissions Tutor.

English language

Applicants whose first language is not English will require either the IELTS-Academic test (minimum of 6.5 overall with no subject lower than 6.0) or an equivalent national qualification.
