BSc in International Management and Modern Languages
Meet our students

IMML students

As part of the international management and modern languages degree programme, we all went to Chile for our placement year...all of us split it into two in that we had fifty per cent of it in a business school - one of the most prestigious universities in the country - and also fifty per cent in a work placement...

James Bruce

I graduated from IMML French in 2002 and started work with Danone in November of that year. I started out working in France for Danone Waters whose brands are Evian, Volvic and Badoit. I completed a six-month placement in their head office working as part of the merchandising team and then spent two years working in Sales as a Territory Manager. This role involved managing a portfolio of around sixty supermarkets and hypermarkets in the Parisian suburbs, and negotiating with independent and retail chain outlets to optimise Danone’s presence in stores. I was really immersed into French culture as all business was conducted in French.

In June 2005, I moved back to the UK to work for Danone's dairy business as National Account Executive for Sainsbury’s. The main brands I was working with were Actimel, Activia and Shape. My main responsibilities were managing our relationship with the convenience and online formats of the Sainsbury’s business, as well as supporting the Danone Account Manager in negotiations with the buyer.

In September 2006 I became Account Manager for Waitrose where the main objective was to build and execute a sales strategy to achieve volume, turnover and profitability targets, by managing the negotiations with the buyer in terms of price, promotions and shelf space. Since November 2007, I have been working as Account Manager for Tesco, our largest customer, managing the relationship with the buying team at Tesco Head Office.

Danone UK is a great fit for IMML graduates because it’s a young company that is growing fast. This means there are plenty of opportunities and you can get a lot of experience and responsibility quite quickly

I chose IMML because I was seeking a challenge and wanted to nurture my enthusiasm for both business management and the German language. A 50:50 combination of the latter is rare, adding to the exclusivity of the degree. It encompasses a wide range of disciplines ranging from politics, economics and law to finance and international business relations.

For me, the year spent on placement at Siemens VDO in Frankfurt and in Regensburg was truly superb. The culture and language immersion enabled me to develop myself on academic and individual bases, not to mention linguistically.

In the first semester of my final year I got the opportunity to go on an academic exchange to Paris. It was an amazing experience and I think one of the best things with Bath University is that they have really amazing links with other universities around the world...

I definitely recommend coming to study BBA at Bath. Not only does it make you very employable at the end - a lot of my colleagues have already been offered jobs from their placements - but it’s a good fun course and everyone’s really friendly...

Business Administration at Bath is a unique experience. The course works closely with business and through two placements gives a great chance to find out which areas you do (and don’t!) want to work in. Widely varied course options mean the BBA can include everything from Marketing to Finance, IT to International Business, Economics or Sustainability.

I’ve enjoyed the freedom to study what really interests me and to start to shape my academic work towards an eventual career; making some great friends along the way.

My decision to study at Bath was based on a number of factors. Initially I looked at the league tables and identified Bath, Lancaster and Warwick as the best places to study Business Administration. Although I received offers from all three universities, I chose Bath because it's a campus-based University and I liked the fact that the School of Management is quite small. I also knew about the School of Management's excellent reputation.

I chose to study Business Administration as I wasn't sure about my future career direction. I decided that gaining a broad business degree at a top University would provide a good grounding and lead to a number of career options.

I've learnt a great deal from studying the BBA. I particularly like the variety and flexibility of the course structure. The programme is designed in a way which enables you to determine your own direction of study. If you don't want to study a particular subject, for example Finance, you can choose a programme which cuts out Finance altogether so you just concentrate on the modules you are interested in.

I first heard about Bath when I went to a sports event and picked up a prospectus. At this stage I was interested in doing business and saw that Bath offered a business course and I quite liked the structure of the course. I liked the fact that in the first year you study quite broad modules: Accounting, Finance, Economics etc. Then in the second, third and fourth years you can work out your specialisation. That was the key factor for me in choosing Bath, along with the reputation of the University - its position in the rankings.

I also liked the idea of doing placements. I’d taken a year out before coming to Bath and I liked learning about working culture, office politics etc. so I was interested in going on two work placements. The opportunity to have two work placements really appealed to me in case one work placement didn’t work out. It gives you the opportunity to go to another place or into a completely different field.

We have two options: three year course or four year course. I’m doing the four year course with a sandwich placement which means that I’ll spend one year in a company and I’ll be able to put some experience on my CV, earn some money and gain skills...I think it’s an amazing opportunity...

The BSc in Accounting and Finance at Bath provides a good mix of finance and business administration modules. The staff here are also very supportive; in particular, I have received tremendous help during the application process of my industrial placement. I have thoroughly enjoyed the study experience here.
