Career enhancement

I have no doubt that my career growth has been more than influenced by the fact that I am enrolled in the DBA programme. The post that I currently occupy is a senior managerial position in the University of West Indies Open Campus and would normally have required a priori a PhD. However I have been given much support from my supervisors and peers as they are aware of the reputation of the DBA offered in the School of Management at the University of Bath.

I am already at the apex of my career as University Registrar. Hence, I enrolled on the DBA not so much to widen opportunities for promotion as to enhance my managerial professionalism which would in the end help me perform my duties better... As we struggle to make ends meet with limited funding from government, the ideas on entrepreneurship which I have acquired have helped me to advise senior management colleagues and our Council on how we can diversify our sources of funding so that we should be able to satisfy our mandate to carry out research, teach, carry out consultancies and engage in outreach.. Finally, as my country is working towards the establishment of the Council for National Higher Education and as it develops national plans related to tertiary education my input as I participate in these exercises is largely informed by what I have learnt on the DBA.

I was appointed to be the Rector of one of the most prestigious Schools of Business in Colombia. Its name is CESA (Colegio de Estudios Superiores de Administración) and it is a specialised higher education institution in Business Administration. It has been the Higher Education Institution for the majority of today's Presidents of Companies in Colombia. In the process of election I competed against many other very important people from industry and government. Finally I was chosen as the Rector... one of the key factors as to why I was chosen was the DBA at the University of Bath. Overall I have to say that the University of Bath has been very important in my professional life.

The Bath DBA

quote

I have been appointed Associate Professor in Education Financing. This is in addition to another recent appointment as Vice President, Planning Finance and Operations. Added to my portfolio with those appointments are University Planning, Project Management, Facilities Management and ICT Services. All as a result of my being successful from the DBA programme at Bath. The programme has enabled me to explore all the avenues of HEI management and this has expanded my previous base in Finance. I now straddle both administration and academica as I also lecture on two masters programmes (Master of Business Administration – UTECH and Master of Arts in Teaching – Mico University College). In those engagements I draw on the base from the DBA as I explore financial, managerial and educational issues with my students.

I have no doubt that the research I have conducted as part of my doctoral studies has positively influenced my practices as a manager and helped me achieve favourable results in my past and present positions. I further believe that my current involvement in leading-edge, applied research in higher education management, my capability of focusing my research on issues that would be of direct benefit to my employer, and my demonstrating the ability to convert theory and research into action and results directly and positively impacted my candidacy for my current position. Finally, I am firmly convinced that my involvement in the DBA (HEM) program has had a very positive effect on my ability to envision and strategize and on my perceived value to my colleagues and institutions.
