Research Collaborations
Feeding in to and building on the work we do on the customised programmes and open programmes are long-term research relationships. These research collaborations are run and designed with development impact objectives at the forefront.
We are currently carrying out research, jointly funded by the CIPD, which is seeking to identify the impact of current practices in selection and development on the identification and growth of trustworthiness in leaders. The research will include interviews with those responsible for senior talent management within organisations. It will explore the extent to which trustworthiness in leaders is assessed and developed, and consider any ways that it underpins current practice. It will also look at the characteristics and processes through which leaders build trust with those they work with.
This research is building on the work published by our Dean in Where has all the trust gone (Hope Hailey et al, CIPD, 2012). The research identified five organisations which managed to retain the trust of their workforces despite having to implement cost cutting, downsizing and restructuring following the financial crisis in 2008. In all five organisations the attitudes and behaviours of their senior leaders was a significant factor in their ability to retain the trust of their employees.
The workshops on deepening trust at HMRC were developed as a result of the findings of the first phase of this research. We are now working with a cadre of civil servants at HMRC to apply this research to a larger group.
