My research interests can be broadly summarised as being focused on the interactions between people and technology. In particular, I am interested in the nature of communication via technology, and the ways in which system design influences communication. I have a long standing research interest in self-disclosure – both in computer-mediated communication and survey methodology. Linked to this, I have recently conducted an ESRC-funded research project on the topic of privacy and self-disclosure online. This work is extending to examine issues of trust, and also deception in different media (funded by the British Academy). I am also researching social software in various guises – including the use and impact of avatars on communication and psychological states (with Vasalou), and social networking sites.
