Job Title:
Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Consumption and Behaviour Change
Subject Group:
Key Research Interests:
Sustainable (consumption) behaviour; behaviour change; values; social norms; personal norms; social networks; interventions; policy acceptability and acceptance; message framing; (green) consumerism.
Research Interests
My main research areas focus on how values and norms can be used to explain and change (sustainable) consumption behaviour. For example, when do people (not) act in accordance with their prevalent values and norms? When are interventions or policies aiming to promote sustainable behaviour effective and acceptable for the public? How can messages be effectively framed in order to promote sustainable behaviour? Although my background is in social and environmental psychology, I approach sustainable consumption and behaviour from a multi-disciplinary perspective. I have collaborated with different academics from various disciplines (psychology, technology, sociology, environmental and political sciences, geography) as well as with governmental and commercial professionals, on an international, national and local level. I have been involved in different EU-projects in the 5th (ASI) and 7th (BAR-energy, Corpus) EU framework programmes.
PhD Supervision
I am always interested in collaborating with PhD students on their projects. Please contact me prior to writing your research proposal, so we can discuss potential research directions in more detail. I mainly supervise students with a quantitative research background.
At the moment, I am looking for PhD students interested in the following topics:
- the effectiveness of messages promoting (green) consumerism;
- spill-over effects of public opposition and support of environmental policies (e.g. pricing policies aimed at reducing car use in cities);
- the use of values, goals, social norms and personal norms in sustainable behaviour change interventions;
- the role of social networks in promoting prosocial behaviours
I am currently supervising the following PhD students:
Alina Udall, started 2013-present. Goal priming and promoting green consumerism: How hedonic, gain and normative goals can be activated in interventions aiming to promote green consumerism.
Iljana Schubert, started 2012-present, co-supervising with Prof Adrian Newton, Bournemouth University. Sustainable consumerism going viral: The role of social networks to guide sustainable transitions.
Carrie Lee Garson, started 2010-present, Bournemouth University. Environmental values in children: The development of a validated self-reported instrument to measure environmental values in children (4 years and older).
