Research Interests

Key Research Interests: My research interests are centred around the nature and role of social and organisation networks in innovation, technology diffusion, entrepreneurship, and knowledge creation and sharing, with a particular focus on informality and boundary- spanning. I am also interested in the graphical representation of such networks. I have published across these areas, including a recent book for Oxford University Press; this text adopts a network perspective to reflect upon the management and shaping of innovation both within and beyond the innovating organisation (Conway, S. and Steward, F. (2009) Managing and Shaping Innovation, Oxford: Oxford University Press).

Staff Summary: I was previously a Senior Lecturer in Innovation and Director of Distance Learning at the University of Leicester School of Management (2001-2010). Prior to this, I was a Research Fellow (1994-1997) and Lecturer in Innovation (1997-2001) at Aston Business School. I have also worked for Hewlett Packard (1986-1989) in both software development and technical support for financial information systems.

Areas of Interest for Doctoral and MBA/MSc Research Supervision: the role of social networks in innovation and knowledge transfer; the role of informality and serendipity in innovation and knowledge transfer; the impact of architecture and work-space design on networking, informality, and serendipity, relating to innovation and knowledge transfer; regional clusters and organisation networks within and between sectors; the role and nature of external sources of knowledge / ideas / innovation, with a particular interest in ‘user-innovation’ and the role of intermediaries. I am open to the sectoral / national context of such research, although I have an emerging interest in service sector innovation.
