Meet our students & Graduates

I would like to work in corporate finance. I understand it thanks to this university and to our lecturer. That’s where I want to go with my career...

Marina Bzelenko - MSc in Accounting & Finance Graduate

The MSc gives you a good mix between academic theory and industry background. It helps to bridge the gap from undergraduate. The Masters uses examples from the workplace and shows you how it’s really done.

Where and what did you study for your undergraduate degree?

I started my undergraduate studies after having finished a banking apprenticeship at a German Bank. I studied Business Administration and Economics (BAE) for four semesters at the University of Passau. I then participated in an ERASMUS Scholarship for a year, where I took BSc Business Administration and MSc Corporate Finance classes at Lund University – School of Economics and Management (Lund, Sweden).

Why did you decide to study in the UK and why Bath?

Given my corporate banking background and BAE studies I was clear about returning to banking after my Masters. I also knew that a combination of Accounting and Finance and refining my English language skills would be important in my career. Furthermore, I was looking for somewhere which had a friendly and professional atmosphere with nice surroundings; the University of Bath provided all of these.

How did your degree/ experience at Bath help prepare you for your career?

The exceptional combination of Accounting and Finance and the freedom to specialise in the second semester was the perfect concept to prepare for my career. The professors were approachable and helpful, enabling you to make most of your studies. The fantastic people I met, from all over the world, encouraged me to succeed on this challenging course.

Where do you work now?

Currently, I am working as an Analyst for UniCredit Group in Munich within Corporate Finance Advisory - Mergers & Acquisitions.

What advice do you have for our current students?

Study hard, socialise and get to know the people you are studying with! Studying at Bath is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience such a diverse group of people with the same interests as you. Make sure you keep in contact after studies -you won’t regret the effort!

Portrait of Ginevra Corti.

The flexible structure of the MSc programme allowed me to focus on the areas I was most interested in. In particular, the quantitative content learnt on the course has proven very helpful in my present job at Swiss Re, the world’s largest reinsurer.

At Bath I studied with bright and stimulating people from around the world. It was a very enriching experience, not only because it has helped me develop my interpersonal communication skills, but also because it has allowed me to establish long-lasting, friendly relationships with people living in many different countries.

I continue to see some of these friends quite regularly in London, where we are now working.  Last but not least, I had the opportunity of spending a year in a quiet and beautiful, historical town such as Bath, the most pleasant place one can envisage to carry out both study and after-study activities

Where and what did you study for your undergraduate degree?

My undergraduate studies can be separated into two major parts.  For three years I studied at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, majoring in International Finance and Economics. In my third year of undergraduate study, I won a chance to study finance in Indiana University of Pennsylvania, US, as an exchange student.

Why did you decide to study in the UK and why Bath?

The experience of studying in the US confirmed my decision to target finance for my MSc studies and also stimulated my interest to explore the world more widely. As a result, I decided to deepen my knowledge of finance in Britain. I was impressed by the School of Management’s rankings as well as the structure of the course.

How did your degree/ experience at Bath help prepare you for your career?

Without any doubt the structure of the MSc in Accounting and Finance is compact and purpose-oriented, just like the campus. The core units effectively strengthen your knowledge of accounting and finance. Meanwhile, the electives supply various options for students to specialize and focus on different career directions.

As I see it, to explore the external world you need to understand it, rather than simply observe. Finance is definitely an industry which requires cooperation and communication, both based on understanding. Life in Bath enriched my experience of communicating and cooperating with people from different nationalities and thus helped with my career choice and also with the selection process.

Where do you work now?

On my return to China, I secured a place on a Graduate Trainee programme with the China Construction Bank in Beijing.
