Business and Society: The Strategic Challenges

Aims:

This two semester course offers an overview of the growing field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The course will enable you to:

  • develop an understanding and appreciation of the strategic challenges currently facing companies in their efforts to link successful business practice with broader social, environmental and ethical concerns;
  • reflect on creative perspectives on the evolving relationship between business and a wider range of stakeholders;
  • understand new practices and business opportunities which are developing as companies attempt to respond to these challenges, and their sometimes contradictory effects.

Content:

This course focuses on the ways in which an increasing number of companies are attempting to address these challenges through developing practices for assuming social and environmental responsibility in doing business. A strategy simulation in business and sustainable development will set the context for the course. Whilst some theoretical perspectives will be offered, considerable attention will be devoted to allowing you to discuss and reflect upon practical challenges faced by business using a series of practical case studies.

Assessment:

An unseen 2-hour written examination at the end of Semester 1 (50%) and a 3,000 word individual assignment (50%).
