Research in Organisational Dynamics

Aims:

This two semester course will enable you to:

  • develop your understanding of organisations as complex adaptive systems of people located in evolving economic, cultural, social and political systems;  
  • understand organisational theories and concepts, in particular the relationship between the context of organisations/organising and their purpose and outcomes;
  • analyse particular organisational settings and develop recommendations, using appropriate conceptual lenses;
  • engage critically with organistional research, popular management literature and contemporary debates. Concepts and theories will be illustrated with reference to a broad spectrum of industries, sectors and national/cross-cultural/ global contexts, e.g. IT/high-tech, manufacturing, cultural industries, public sector, non-profit/voluntary and entrepreneurial.

Content:

Topics covered will include: ‘classic’ perspectives on organisations; organisational design, contingency perspectives, control, and innovation; contemporary theorising into network forms, virtual organising, organisational ecologies, values, national culture and global organisations; and ‘weak’ / ‘strong’ organisations and the role of people improvising organising and their implications for understanding creativity, innovation and action.

Assessment:

2-hour exam (at the end of semester 1 - 65%) and an individual assignment 2,500 words (at the end of the semester 2, teaching period 35%).
