Where and what did you study for your undergraduate degree?

I studied Bachelor of Engineering (Chemicals) at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal University.

Why did you decide to study at Bath for your Masters?

I was eager to join our family business as soon as I could; my degree had given me the technical knowledge but I wanted to gain an understanding of management and finance before I took on any responsibility. The UK became my obvious choice as it was the only place where I found Masters programmes that could be completed within a year.
I had two criteria for choosing a university: the course ranking and the city. I chose the University of Bath School of Management as it was ranked 1st for MSc Management in the UK, and Bath is not only a great city but also very safe.

How did your degree/ experience at Bath help prepare you for your career?

My work involves dealing with people from all over the world. Making friends at Bath has made me more comfortable in a multicultural environment and has developed my understanding of business associates from different countries. I now have a clear understanding of my companys operations, especially international trading, and as a result I am more confident working independently.

Where do you work now?

I am now Executive Director - Polyurethanes Department at FlexoFoam Pvt. Ltd. in Gurgaon, India.

What advice do you have for prospective students?

As an international student, you may be apprehensive about approaching the staff or the professors for advice, but they are very supportive and friendly. The city of Bath has a lot to offer - more than you could see or do in one year, so make the most of it!

After graduating with an MA (Hons) Psychology, I knew I wanted a business degree to improve my appeal to prospective employers.  I chose the MSc in Management at Bath ultimately because of the reputation of the School of Management and the breadth of courses which were available on the programme.

I was particularly interested in the MSc because of the opportunity to study a spectrum of core subjects in the first semester and then being offered that chance to specialise if I wished.  I strongly believe that the degree has given me a real edge in the competitive job market having built my business acumen, team-working, leadership, communication and organizational skills.

I graduated from the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece with a four-year course in International Economics and Politics. I chose the MSc in Management at Bath because it has an excellent international reputation and a flexible course structure. It gave me the opportunity to study all the main business areas (Finance, Marketing, HR, Business Economics, and Operations) and then specialise in one of these. In addition, as it would be my first time studying abroad, I wanted to live in a city that would allow me to adapt quickly and Bath was definitely the ideal choice.  The MSc course provided me with both the academic knowledge and the transferable skills that are invaluable in my job today. It was also a great experience.

After my undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Economics from a German University, I gained some business experience during a year in Spain. During this time, I developed a general interest in business.

Instead of gaining specialist skills on an exclusively focused programme, I wanted to learn more about general management and the interdependencies between different functional management areas. The Bath MSc in Management was a great opportunity to do so. The flexible structure of the programme gave me the chance to gain an overview of different management areas in the first semester and then choose courses which particularly interested me in the second semester.

What really made my time on the programme a unique learning experience was the chance to work in teams with bright people from all over the world. If I look back on my year on the MSc, I have probably learned most from working and studying together with people with different academic and cultural backgrounds.”

Portrait of Philip Turvil.

After gaining a BSc in Horticulture from the University of Reading I realised that in order to get ahead in the horticultural industry it was important to complement my horticultural skills with a management degree.

I chose Bath as the School of Management has very strong links with the Association of MBAs which gave Bath’s MSc pre-eminence. I knew it was highly respected and offered the essential management expertise that would be so important in my – and indeed any - profession where quality counts.

Moreover, the degree programme offered an inspiring range of specialist modules. My own options – including human resources and project management – built invaluably on my related experience – in particular, my designing and project managing garden schemes.

The MSc offers tremendous opportunities. It is a pathway into the future to help establish myself professionally in the horticultural industry – whether that path be garden based, a continuation of my industry journalism, or even consultancy in the future.

The Bath experience has also introduced new friends from all around the world and I feel very proud to be part of the Alumni. I would warmly recommend Bath as a key career stepping stone. It works so well, and at so many levels.

Portrait of Jindu Chen.

The MSc in Management enabled me to specialise in my favourite business area in the second semester and for my dissertation. found that few other business schools offered this course structure, because it requires a huge amount of optional courses to satisfy students’ needs in 5 different routes. Bath School of Management makes this programme work extremely successfully; this reflects its competitive advantage in academic expertise in so many areas.

Throughout the MSc, I was continuously challenged and given the opportunity to study along-side inspirational students from 38 countries. This interaction was the most exciting and fascinating aspect of the programme. In my Operations group, 7 group members were from 7 different counties.

Overall, the year spent studying the MSc in Management was the most challenging and rewarding year in my life, and it definitely helped me to become an all-round, knowledgeable and international team-player.”
