21 December 2004: EIBA Copenhagen Prize Winners

At the recent 30th European International Business Academy (EIBA) Conference hosted by the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, Dr Felicia Fai and her PhD student, Jing-Lin Duanmu, won the Copenhagen Prize for the best paper written by scholars under 40 years of age with their paper: “Using supplier relationships for economic development: the process and content of knowledge transfers between MNEs (multinational enterprises) and Chinese suppliers”. The paper was selected because it was felt that it continued to push the boundaries of the International Business field further, both in its subject matter and its use of multiple-theoretical perspectives. 21 December 2004: The Management of Managerial Knowledge

On Friday 3rd December, the Work and Employment Research Centre (WERC) at the School of Management welcomed Dr Malcolm Lewis, Senior lecturer in the Department of Management at the University of Otago, New Zealand, to discuss issues surrounding how managers make business decisions and develop company strategy. 20 December 2004: Guinness World Record Attempt

Twenty-four year old Phil White, who graduated last year with a 2:1 in Business Administration from the University of Bath School of Management, is currently battling against the elements, cycling through forest, desert, mountains, rainforest and urban jungle in his bid to raise money for Oxfam. Phil hopes to set an official Guinness World Record by completing the feat of cycling around the world for a minimum required distance of 18,000 miles (28,968km) in the fastest time ever. 16 December 2004: The Bath MBA Graduation Prize Winners

On Monday 13th December, the magnificent setting of the Assembly Rooms in Bath formed the backdrop for The Bath MBA graduation ceremony. The day culminated in the annual graduation ball held at the University’s Claverton Rooms. Both the ceremony and graduation ball included students from all of the Bath MBA programmes: Full-time, Executive and Modular. The School was especially delighted to have in attendance the first graduating cohorts from the Executive MBA in Swindon and the Executive Bath MBA in Athens. [more info]

14 December 2004: International Award for Prof Christine Harland

Professor Christine Harland from the University of Bath School of Management and Director of the School’s Centre for Research into Strategic Purchasing and Supply (CRiSPS), has been awarded the Hans Ovelgonne Award by the International Federation of Purchasing and Materials Management (IFPMM). 13 December 2004: Two Bath MBA Retrospective Scholarships Awarded

The University of Bath, School of Management is delighted to announce that two Retrospective Half Fee-Scholarships of £9000 each have been awarded to Nicholas Smith and Jonathan Maddison who today graduated with the Masters of Business Administration with Distinction. [more info]

8 December 2004: School of Management Announces New MSc in Accounting and Finance Degree

The University of Bath School of Management is pleased to announce the launch of a new postgraduate degree, the MSc in Accounting and Finance starting in September 2005. The new programme is an intensive, one-year, full time Master's programme designed for ambitious graduates who have achieved a good UK undergraduate degree or its international equivalent, who currently have little or no business experience. 22 November 2004: Innovation Alive and Well in UK Business

For the second year running, Professor Andrew Graves CBE, Director of the School of Management’s Lean and Agile Research Group (LARG) and acknowledged as one of the world’s leading experts in his field, was invited to judge and present an award at the National Business Awards. The winners were announced on 9th November at a glittering VIP awards ceremony at London ’s Grosvenor House Hotel. [more info]

19 November 2004: ESRC Relationship Marketing Seminar

The International Marketing and Purchasing Research Centre at the University of Bath School of Management has been invited by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) to organise their fourth seminar on Relationship Marketing entitled: ‘Managing in Relationships: Future Operational and Organizational Issues’. This day-long event with internationally renowned scholars will take place on the 18th February, 2005 at Bailbrook House. [more info]

19 November 2004: Developing Identity Through Work

On 29th October, a group of third year students on the BSc in Business Administration (BBA) and BSc in Sociology with Human Resource Management programmes visited the unique Matara centre in Kingscote, Gloucestershire, to meet with its founder, Geoffrey Higgins. The trip was organised by Dr Svenja Tams as part of the students’ elective ‘Developing Identity Through Work’ and financed through both student contributions and sponsorship from the School of Management. 16 November 2004: Why Smart Executives Fail

On Tuesday 9th November Professor Sydney Finkelstein, widely acknowledged as one of the world’s top authorities on strategy and leadership, gave the inaugural presentation in the University of Bath School of Management’s, Dean’s Lecture Series. The theme for the series is ‘Leadership, Change and Performance’ and Professor Finkelstein’s address ‘Why Smart Executives Fail ’ provided a fascinating opening lecture. [more info]

12 November 2004: EMP Certificate Presentation Evening

The presentation dinner for the School of Management/ Engineering Management Partnership’s (EMP) Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering Management will be held on Friday 19 November at the University of Bath in Swindon. 10 November 2004: Robert Heath Scoops Two Top Prizes Awarded by the Marketing Research Society

A paper written by Robert Heath of the School of Management and Pam Hyder of Standard Life has won the two top prizes awarded by the Market Research Society (MRS): the David Winton Award and the ISBA Award. This is the first time a single paper has ever won both awards. [more info]

9 November 2004: International Award for CRiSPS

On 22nd October at the International Public Procurement Conference held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, academics from the School of Management’s Centre for Research in Strategic Purchasing and Supply (CRiSPS) were presented with the ‘Best Manuscript Award’ for their paper entitled ‘Promoting Competitive Markets: The Role of Public Procurement’. 5 November 2004: Harvard Business Review Spotlight Article

5 November 2004: Women in Business: Newcomers, Aliens, Immigrants

Margaret Heffernan, previous CEO of five companies in the UK and US, gave a thought provoking guest lecture at the University of Bath School of Management on Wednesday 27th October, sharing her research from her new book The Naked Truth: A Working Woman ’s Manifesto on Business and What Really Matters. 5 November 2004: Senior Thai Civil Servants Visit School of Management

On Monday 1st November, the School of Management welcomed eleven Thai visitors who are participants on the Thai Senior Executive Development Programme at the civil service training institute in Thailand. This is a multi-disciplinary management development programme for top senior management. [more info]

3 November 2004: MSc Rugby Stars

Rob Higgitt and Owen Evans, professional rugby players for the Bristol Shoguns and full-time students on the University of Bath School of Management’s MSc in Management, are applying their MSc and professional sporting experience in setting up their own sports consultancy business in health and fitness. 28 October 2004: MBA Students Enter ‘Winner of Winners ’ Competition

Next Tuesday (2nd November), Nick Smith and Stephen Mayers, students on the full-time MBA programme at the University of Bath School of Management, will battle it out against other students from the University of Bath, the University of Bristol, and the University of the West of England in the first ever joint ‘Winner of Winners’ business competition. 19 October 2004: Professor Andrew Pettigrew appointed member of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

Professor Andrew Pettigrew, Dean of the University of Bath School of Management, has been appointed member of Council to the ESRC. This prestigious position enables Professor Pettigrew to share responsibility with other members of Council for carrying out the ESRC’s functions and duties as set out in its Charter. Council is responsible for the overall strategy and policy of the ESRC and includes members of the business, voluntary, and public sectors, as well as the academic community. [more info]

13 October 2004: Wellness Weekend for MBA and MSc Students

TEAMBATH FOCUS is running a ‘Wellness Weekend’ on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October tailored to the needs of students from the School of Management’s MBA and MSc programmes. The Wellness Weekend involves interactive physical and mental workshops addressing issues of work/life balance, healthy eating, stress management and lifestyle management. The workshop’s aim is to encourage participants to become healthier managers whilst ensuring they get the best motivation and productivity from their staff. [more info]

11 October 2004: Making a Difference through Action Research

The beautiful setting of Hawkwood College in Gloucestershire provided the backdrop to the tenth of the Centre for Action Research in Professional Practice’s (CARPP) experiential conferences. This internationally acclaimed conference welcomed attendees from across the world including: Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Hong Kong, Finland and the USA. The theme for the conference, Making a Difference through Action Research was chosen to reflect the concern for the ways in which action research can address the major issues of our time: human flourishing within a safe and just society, and the sustainability of the eco-systems of our planet. 7 October 2004: School of Management Announces New Partnership with QinetiQ

University of Bath School of Management has unveiled a major new development in its course portfolio, thanks to a new collaboration with QinetiQ – the country’s leading science and technology firm. The QinetiQ Core Graduate Programme is a two-year course, with modules running every quarter, and is designed to give new recruits the commercial awareness they need to expand QinetiQ’s already strong presence in defence, security and technology markets. 6 October 2004: Manufacturing the Future - LARG (Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre) Showcase

A ‘Showcase Event’ opened by Lord Sainsbury of Turville, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Science and Innovation, was held on 14th and 15th September at Old Trafford in Manchester. This event was hosted by the EPSRC and aimed to provide a stage to highlight the research activities and achievements of the 17 current LARGs (Innovative Manufacturing Research Centres). Representatives from the University of Bath School of Management’s LARG and the Faculty of Engineering and Design’s LARG presented their research at the event which involved over 150 delegates. 1 October 2004: Change Management Consortium – Introductory Workshop

On 13th September 2004, 39 practitioners and academics attended a workshop held at the University of Bath to welcome the Change Management Consortium to its new home at the School of Management. 20 September 2004: Student wins Amazon Marathon

Anna Macpherson, who is soon to start the final year of the BSc (Hons) in Business Administration (BBA), has just completed The Jungle Marathon - a 210km self-sufficient footrace through the Amazon Jungle in Brazil. It is only the second time the race has been run, and it is regarded as one of the toughest ultra-marathon races in existence. [more info]

30 July 2004: Graduation 2004 School of Management Prize Winners

The University of Bath School of Management celebrated the graduation of 188 undergraduate students in the splendour of the city’s Abbey on Tuesday 13th July. The graduation ceremony was followed by a special event for graduating students, their parents and supporters during which the graduation prizes for this year’s BSc in Business Administration (BBA) and BSc in International Management with Modern Languages (IMML) students were awarded. Bath MBA student Mark Alleyne, Club Captain and Head Coach of the Gloucestershire County Cricket Team, lead his side to an eight-wicket win against Worcestershire in the C &G Trophy final at Lord's. [more info]

22 June 2004: The Bath MBA ’s 30 Years of Entrepreneurial Success

The Claverton Entrepreneurship Programme, an integral part of the Full-time Bath MBA programme, celebrates its thirtieth birthday this year. Each year MBA students from different industry backgrounds and different nationalities spend nine months working on the business plans for their entrepreneurial ideas. The programme culminates in a business plan competition, sponsored by ICON Corporate Finance, and this year the winners are the team behind Kiwi Security.com. [more info]
