19 December 2005: ‘Babyish’ Barbie under attack from little girls, study shows
Barbie’s days on the Christmas wish-list could be numbered, according to a new study by the University of Bath which found that many 7-11 year old girls hate the doll so much that they physically attack it.

the world's top 100 MBA programmes, the Bath MBA is placed 38th in the world,
a rise of five places from its 2004 position. Bath is placed 16th in Europe

This year’s annual Business Schools’ Sailing Regatta saw the

22 June 2005: Entrepreneurial Success for Bath MBAs
Bath MBA graduate, Nick Smith, fought
off stiff competition to be named winner of this year’s University
of Bath Business Plan Competition. The competition - which is sponsored
by the Sulis Seedcorn Fund and open to all staff, students and recent graduates
from the University - gives entrants the chance to develop entrepreneurial
skills whilst developing an idea for a product or business.

A team of Bath MBA students have developed
a device that could stop mobile phones from ringing in cinemas, libraries
and quiet train carriages. The hardware device can detect transmitting mobile
devices and generates alerts to enforce safe and responsible usage.

22 June 2005: Triple Success for School of Management Academics
Three of the four University of Bath prizes for excellence in teaching,
mentoring and research have been won by academics within the School of Management.
The University awards were set up to encourage and recognise significant
contributions by staff and students to the University. It is rare for so
many of the highly competitive prizes to be won by members of one area of
the University, reflecting the high level of expertise within the School.

As part of an ongoing study, the workshop aimed to investigate purchasing

18 March 2005: Irrational Succession
Professor Rakesh Khurana of Harvard Business School engaged in a lively
and thought-provoking presentation at the latest in the School of Management’s
Dean’s Lecture Series. The title of his lecture, ‘Irrational
Succession’ referred to the current process many organizations follow
in appointing their CEO and the damage that can be done by placing too much
value on charismatic leadership. In what the Dean of the School of Management,
Prof Andrew Pettigrew referred to as ‘first-class research’,
Prof Khurana has challenged the corporate status-quo and in so doing, reminded
the audience that a business school’s role is to challenge, and not
just reflect society.

7 January 2005: Personal Chair Appointment
We are delighted to announce the promotion of Dr Richard
Vidgen who has been appointed Professor of Information Systems in the
School of Management. Richard has built his 13-year academic career
on the foundation of 15 years of working in information systems development
in industry. During his career he has been employed by a large US
software
firm, a high street bank, and has worked as a consultant.
