School of Management awards two honorary degrees
Two honorary degrees were conferred during the School of Management’s graduation award ceremonies which took place last month in the splendour of Bath Abbey.
Professor Richard Mawditt OBE, founder of the DBA in Higher Education Management, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws.

Richard began his career at the University Bath when he was appointed as Director of Finance. He then went on to become Secretary and Registrar of the University until he took early retirement in 1994. After this, Richard joined the School of Management as an academic and founded a new degree in 2002: a professional doctorate in Higher Education Management.
The programme was immediately successful, enabling participants to engage creatively in the serious study and analysis of higher education at all levels. Attracting leading administrators and academics, the DBA (HEM) has produced nine graduates since its inception with another eight expected to graduate later this year. More than 80 students from all over the world are currently enrolled on what is one of the only programmes of its kind in the UK.
In recognition of his work in higher education, particularly in Africa, Richard was awarded the UNESCO chair in Higher Education Management, and this in addition to the OBE award in 1989 for his services to higher education.
Bob Wigley, an alumnus of the BSc in Business Administration class of 1983 and Chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe, Middle East and Africa, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Business Administration.
Since graduating, Bob has had an extraordinary career in the notoriously volatile investment banking sector. After building a world-class reputation in Mergers, Acquisitions and Flotations – leading, for example, the teams that worked on Asda’s £7bn sale to WalMart, the £13bn merger of Cable & Wireless Communications with NTL, Philip Green’s £1bn acquisition of Arcadia, the £1.25bn flotation of Burberry and Logica’s £1bn merger with CMG - Bob has achieved equally impressive executive success within Merrill Lynch.
Professor Avi Shankar, Senior Lecturer and Director of Studies for the MSc in Marketing, provided the oration for Sir Ian Botham’s award, Doctor of Laws.
The awards were presented to Richard and Bob on 26th June 2008. Photos from the ceremony can be viewed here
