Sri Lanka eco-factory achieves highest accreditation from US Green Building Council
In 2008, the Sri-Lankan eco-factory built as part of Marks and Spencer’s ‘Plan A’ eco-iniative in partnership with their supplier MAS Intimates, was the world’s first purpose-built green factory for apparel manufacturing.
Now, it has been awarded LEED (platinum) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED certification system aims to improve performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
The project became the subject of a study for the Lowcarbonworks team, coordinated by Professor Peter Reason of the School of Management. A three-year project jointly funded by the EPSRC and ESRC, Lowcarbonworks explored the non-technical factors that inhibit or enable the uptake of new low-carbon technologies using Action Research as a methodology.
Back in 2007, the Lowcarbonworks team was contacted by MSc alumnus Vidhura Ralapanawe who was tasked with project-managing the build of the new factory. Forming part of Marks and Spencer’s ‘Plan A’ campaign, which required them to reduce the carbon footprint of its suppliers, the new factory supplies lingerie for the high street chain. An account of the organisational issues in the design, building and commissioning of this factory can be found in the Insider Voices report on the project.
