Mike Adams awarded the Professor Kenneth Black Jr. Distinguished Service Award
Professor Mike Adams, Chair in Strategic Risk Management at the School of Management, has been awarded the Professor Kenneth Black Jr. Distinguished Service Award at the 47th Annual Meeting of the International Insurance Society (IIS) in Toronto, Canada, 19-22 June, 2011.
The award recognises Professor Adams’ contribution to the continued growth and development of the International Insurance Society (IIS) and his academic work in the fields of insurance and risk.
The IIS, whose headquarters is in New York, is the largest insurance industry business network organisation in the world with over 1000 members comprising board-level executives, leading academics, regulators, amongst others from over 50 countries. The IIS’s mission is to inform leading insurance industry participants about the current strategic issues facing global insurance markets and to promote knowledge and understanding through the annual meeting and in collaboration with the Geneva Association, through applied research with academia, consultants and others.
In awarding this honour, Mr Mike Morrissey, CEO and President of the IIS, said:
“Professor Mike Adams has been a long-time stalwart of the IIS and has actively participated in the organisation, both as an academic moderator and UK ambassador. I can think of no one more worthy of receiving the Kenneth Black Award this year than Professor Adams.”
Professor Adams said:
“It was an unexpected but great honour to receive the Kenneth Black Distinguished Service Award this year. I look forward to working closely with the IIS in the future through my role as UK ambassador.”

Mike Adams is Professor of Strategic Risk Management at the School of Management. His key research interests are the interface between risk management and strategic finance, corporate governance and risk, accounting issues in Insurance, historical development of insurance markets, and economic efficiency and market structure in insurance markets. The School of Management has a faculty of around 90 teaching and research staff, including visiting academics, with a support team of around 70 managerial and administrative staff. There are approximately 2,100 students in total comprising some 200 MBA students, 460 Master’s students, 210 full- and part-time research students, and over 1100 undergraduates following BSc degrees. The School also runs joint undergraduate programmes with Departments in the Faculties of Engineering and Design, Science and Humanities and Social Sciences.
