School of Management welcomes new students
The School of Management has welcomed its new intake of BSc and MSc students for 2011 with a series of induction activities and events. The annual Big Team Challenge ran for a third year, and students also got to enjoy the cultural World Café Event as well as undergraduate and postgraduate evening drinks receptions.
The Big Team Challenge saw students work together in teams on a 60 minute challenge to design and put together a goodie bag of branded items and then pitch these ideas to the Corporate Partner representatives to become the winning team. Through this challenge, students were able to have the opportunity to hear more about the specific Corporate Partner sponsors and receive valuable feedback from them, as well as gaining good experience on presenting, the importance of time management and working together as a group. Also introduced this year was ‘Meet the Corporates’ - a series of informal sessions attended by nearly 350 students, who were able to quiz the School’s Corporate Partners and find out more about placement opportunities and working for the companies. Partners represented were BP, PricewaterhouseCoopers, 3M, L’Oreal, Zurich, Procter & Gamble, Intel, and Property Solutions.
Lizzie Darlington from L’Oreal said:
“The Big Team Challenge represented a great opportunity for us to meet a broad range of students from all nationalities across the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate provision. L’Oreal staff were able to work closely and intimately with the students, and this provided some real benefits – we gained some valuable market insight from the informal interactions with different groups and we also raised our profile more broadly across the School of Management. An enjoyable, friendly and beneficial week that we are very much looking forward to taking part in again next year.”
Feedback from students was highly positive. Comments included “I enjoyed making new friends from all over the world”, “I loved the World Café and The Big Team Challenge – it was super fun”, and there was praise for “the positivity and enthusiasm of the staff. It’s been a lovely welcome.”
Student Experience Officers Eliza Shaw and Gemma Bridges said:
“Through the School’s induction programme this year, we have really enjoyed meeting lots of the new School of Management students and we hope that we have helped them begin to settle in. We have already received some great comments from students, particularly about The Big Team Challenge and the opportunity to meet some of our Corporate Partners so early on in their studies. Thanks to all the student ambassadors and welcomers who helped out with activities - their help was invaluable.”
