Ian Tonks appointed to REF panel for Business and Management Studies

Ian TonksIan Tonks, Professor of Finance at the School of Management, has been appointed to one of HEFCE’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) sub-panels.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF), which will be completed in 2014, is the new system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions (HEIs) and will replace the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008), the School of Management was placed 5th for the quality of its research, equal to Oxford and LSE. An impressive ninety percent of the School’s faculty submitted to the RAE with 30% of our research rated 4* and therefore considered ‘world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour’. Seventy percent of our research was rated 3* and ‘internationally excellent’.

The REF will be a process of expert review. Institutions will be invited to make submission to 36 units of assessments. The submissions will be assessed by expert sub-panels, working under the leadership and guidance of four main panels to ensure common procedures and consistent application of the overall assessment standards.

Within panel C, Ian will be a member of sub-panel 19 which focuses on the area of Business and Management Studies.
