This year 112 MSc students from the School of Management took part in the annual Zurich Community Challenge. The challenge involves collaboration between Zurich, local charities and organisations, the School of Management and the Students’ Union to give MSc students an opportunity to volunteer and make a difference to local organisations.

In October, MSc students were presented with a choice of different challenges sourced by the Students’ Union and the Bath Volunteer Centre, which they were given five weeks to complete. Each team was assigned a Zurich mentor to provide direction and advice.
This year students worked with a range of local charities that support older people, disabled adults, families and young children: AgeUK, Carrswood Day Centre, Bath Abbey, Bathampton Community Co-operative, Carer’s Centre Bath, Curo Choice, DEBRA, Energy Efficient Widcombe, Foodbank, Greenhill House, Mencap, MHA, The Rainbow Centre, Swallow, The Orangery Nursing Home & Englishcombe House Residential Home and Three Ways School.

The challenges ranged from developing a social media based marketing strategy to conducting market research to help launch new charity appeals. The presentation evening, which took place on Thursday 4th December, allowed the teams to showcase their achievements to senior managers at Zurich, mentors and charity representatives through a two minute video and a ten minute presentation.

Professor Veronica Hope Hailey, Dean of the School of Management commented:
“I really enjoyed the evening and felt humbled by the enthusiasm of the students and their brilliance.”
The winning team: Vikram Khera, Alexandra Kratochvilova, Ying-hua Huang, Shih Hsin Wu, Hong Zeng, Fanfan Zhang and Hongbo Zhong were awarded a cheque for £250 to donate to their charity, MHA. They will have the opportunity to spend an afternoon at Zurich in January networking with senior directors, experiencing some of Zurich’s leadership training programme and having dinner with key Zurich staff.
