MSc students from the Innovation & Technology Management degree were invited to visit the BMW Oxford Mini Plant recently. The MSc in Innovation and Technology Management is a joint degree run by the School of Management and the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The Plant, which has been operating for more than 100 years, includes a high-technology automated body building facility, car preparation areas, a logistics centre, and a state-of-the-art paint shop. BMW’s vision is to manufacture every car to individual customer requirements. The opportunity to see some of the innovative systems that enable production line to operate in this way, was a particular highlight for the students. The group also enjoyed the chance to learn about BMW Mini’s Technology and Marketing strategies.

Student Amy Armstrong said:

'This trip gave me a great insight into how a lean automotive company can be run. It was fascinating to walk around the plant during an operational day and to see techniques and issues that we have discussed in class.'

Director of Studies, Professor Andrew Graves said:

'I am delighted that our students had the opportunity to visit this world class facility at the BMW MINI Plant Oxford. It was great to see how the innovation, product development and supply chain developments contribute to the final assembly plant process where all these key practices, taught on the ITM MSc course, come together.'
