Bulleted and numbered lists
When to use a list
- If you find three or more items in a row, take them out of the paragraph and make them into a bulleted or numbered list
- Use a bulleted list when the items are options and not a sequence
- Use a numbered list when the user should perform or read the items in a particular order
- If items contain links and descriptions, put the link first
How to organise your lists
- Organise the list in a pattern that the user can recognise, such as important to unimportant, familiar to unfamiliar
- If some items deal with the same topic, group them together
- If you have a list that extends beyond the bottom of the window, and you have grouped items, consider identifying each group with a subheading, to help users find the group they are interested in
Example
Chocolate ice-cream
- 300 g of condensed milk
- 4 tsp cocoa powder
- 1 pint of milk
- ½ cup of sugar
- 200g cream
- Boil the milk and let it simmer till it thickens.
- In a bowl, take the cocoa powder, and slowly add some milk to get a lump-free liquid.
- Add the cocoa milk to the boiling pan.
- Add sugar to the milk; check for sweetness.
- Continue to cook till the milk is quite thick and on cooling it becomes thick sauce.
- Take the chocolate sauce, and add the condensed milk. At first speed run it for couple of times.
- Add the whipped cream, fold it into the sauce.
- Transfer to an aluminium bowl, so that it sets faster.
- After 1 hour of setting, remove and whip it again using the blender. Continue doing this 3 to 4 times every hour or so.
- Put it back to set for four or five hours depending on your freezer.
