Saturday 10th September 2005

Spend the day in the beautiful city of Bath. Here are some ideas of things to do:

  • The Royal Circus and Royal Crescent are less than 10 minutes walk from the city centre. Number 1 The Crescent, has been decorated and restored as an example of how it would have looked in the late 18th century. Entrance fee is £4.00 http://www.bath-preservation-trust.org.uk/museums/no1/
  • For afternoon tea try The Bridge Coffee Shop (on Pulteney Bridge with great views over the Weir), The Pump Rooms in the Roman Baths (admission is free and you can have a look at the Roman Baths or sample the famous healing spa waters straight from the fountain), or Sally Lunn’s Refreshment house and museum. More ideas for pubs, cafes or restaurants can be found at:http://www.venue.co.uk/
  • During 8-11th September, Bath hosts the Heritage open days. This event is run by local volunteers and enables you free access into buildings usually closed to the public. http://www.heritageopendays.org/

Sunday 11th Sept 2005

Organised visit to the city of Wells and the Cheddar Caves and Gorge.

In the morning the coach will pick you up from campus and travel to Wells, the smallest city in England  which located just outside of Bath. Visit the impressive cathedral and view the 400 carved figures on the West Front. http://www.touruk.co.uk/somerset/som_wells.htm . Delegates can disembark here and spend the day enjoying this beautiful city or continue to Cheddar and return for a shorter visit later in the day.

The coach will then continue to Cheddar. Here you can explore the spectacular caves (said to have been the inspiration for Helm’s Deep in JRR Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings”) or take a walk along the Cliff-top Gorge walk or visit a factory where the famous Cheddar Cheese is made. http://www.cheddarcaves.co.uk/

Later in the afternoon the coach will return Wells, stopping for about an hour, and then continue to the University of Bath in the evening.

There will be a small charge to cover the cost of the coach (amount to be confirmed). The cost of entrance to the caves is not included.
