How to apply

Applications to our Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics (SAMBa) are open from 1 October to 30 June each year. Apply early as the application process is competitive.

UK and other EU students

Fully funded 4-year studentships are available for all students accepted from the UK and the wider EU.

A studentship covers:

  • University fees
  • payment of a tax-free stipend
  • all SAMBa activities
  • office space and computing facilities

Non-EU students

We may be able to secure funding to support extremely high calibre non-EU students for a full studentship. If you are a non-EU student applying to SAMBa and you have your own funding, or you would like to apply for funding, please  complete an application through the Doctoral College in the first instance. Make sure you include all of the information that is requested for expressions of interest.

Entry requirements

First or upper second class honours degree or equivalent in mathematics or with substantial mathematical content.

Language requirements

IELTS 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components). Check what the equivalent grades are for other tests.

Part-time study

The SAMBa course is designed around a four year full-time programme of study, where students progress together as a cohort. Applicants are expected to be available for full-time study although a part-time option in years two to four may be available under exceptional circumstances.

The process

Initially, expressions of interest should be sent to the Centre Administrator, Jessica Ohren, via email:

Female student

Expressions of interest should include:

  • a short statement (250 words) explaining your motivation for applying to SAMBa
  • a 2-page CV which includes your academic and work experience and your nationality and country of normal residence (for the past 3 years, not including full time education)
  • scans of your academic transcript(s)
  • information on where you heard about SAMBa

A first selection will be made and, if short-listed, you will be invited to submit a formal application through the Doctoral College.

The formal application will then be reviewed and selected candidates will be invited to an interview, after which a final admission decision is made.

Deadlines for submission

Places are usually filled by March so applications received after mid-February will only be considered if spaces are available.
