The Laboratory for Integrated Metrology Applications (LIMA)
LIMA is an independent centre of excellence for collaborative research and delivery of innovative metrology enabled applications, integrating fundamental research (TRLs 1-3) from the IdMRC with industrial applications to develop new technologies at TRL 4-6. The lab has mobile capabilities, validates systems; delivering working solutions; and training staff in metrology technologies for medium to large scale manufacturing. The lab is based in the IdMRC at the University of Bath and is associated with the MAST theme of this centre.
We offer services including verification of instruments and processes, delivery of complete metrology enabled solutions, measurement services and training. Our equipment includes the state of the art indoor GPS (iGPS), laser tracker and laser scanner systems.

LIMA provides independent verification services and expert advice to UK industry. It was formed in order to fill the gaps in the understanding of large volume metrology and to assist UK industry to fully exploit these enabling technologies. We are primarily concerned with the integration of large volume metrology and metrology enabled automation into emerging manufacturing systems.
Unique Characteristics
- The only R&D, and research exploitation hub in the UK focused on metrology applications in meso to large scale manufacturing
- LIMA has the ability to organise multi-partner R&D projects and to easily draw upon the diverse academic resources from the participating Universities
- A unique mobile capability in large volume metrology
Our equipment at Bath includes the state of the art indoor GPS (iGPS), Laser Tracker, Laser Scanning, 3D Vision and systems for Motion Control and Non Destructive Evaluation. Photogrammetry and Optical Measurement systems are available at collaborating Universities.
Announcements and News
Formal opening of LIMA on 25 November 2009.
LIMA is now host to the LIMA Business Technology Centre, an ERDF funded initiative to support South West SMEs improve manufacturing processes. For more information please visit the LIMA BTC page.
