Formula Student car on display at Institution of Mechanical Engineers headquarters

One of the Formula Student racing cars designed and built by engineering students at the University has gone on display at the London Headquarters of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in Birdcage Walk.

The IMechE organises the Formula Student competition, and wanted to showcase its promotion of engineering to young people by displaying one of the cars built for this competition.

The University of Bath was chosen due to its recent successful form and the car was stripped and rebuilt for display by volunteer students. The car is on display suspended by cables in the middle of a stairwell, creating a striking display for visitors that has already attracted a lot of attention.

The car was built in 2008 by a team of 16 students under the supervision of Dr Kevin Robinson and Dr Geraint Owen from the department of Mechanical Engineering. It finished 4th out of 72 international teams at the Formula Student event at the Silverstone racing circuit in July 2008, the highest ever placing by a UK team in the event.

That achievement has since been matched by another team from the University in 2009, reinforcing Bath’s status as the top UK team.

The current TeamBath Racing Team is hoping to compete in the Formula Student Austria competition for the first time this year.
