Mechanical Engineering PhD opportunity with Wessex Water
Asset reliability and security of supply: a life cycle improvement approach
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is looking for a PhD candidate to be part of the newly awarded project with Wessex Water on ‘ Holistic Approaches to Sustainable Water Supply’.
About the project
Start date: October 2013
Funding lasts for three years (full-time). Each year provides:
- Home/EU fee
- Stipend of £13,726 (2013/14 amount).
The successful candidate will contribute to research knowledge and help solve real issues for Wessex Water using an integrated life cycle improvement approach, which will be developed by the candidate.
In many industries, decisions are often made with limited information and little integration and trade-off between Life Cycle Impact and assessment, Life Cycle Costs and risks to the business. The PhD student will focus on providing an approach for integrating Life cycle assessment/impact and cost to ascertain the most appropriate time to renew/dispose of current assets. This will be demonstrated through exemplar assets. The student will work with the existing standard used by Wessex Water for asset management: PAS 55.
As well as being part of the new, exciting project the researcher will join a dynamic and vibrant research team within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the internal research teams and to the wider research community.
How to apply
Candidates should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in engineering or the physical sciences, environmental science, or a related subject. They should have a keen interest in low carbon technologies, asset reliability and life cycle approaches to problem solving.
