Profile

Dr Colin Copeland is a Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering with a specialist background in turbocharging and boosting for downsized engines.

Colin was a Lecturer in Thermodynamics at the University of Bristol in 2011/12 and a Post doctorate rsearcher at Imperial College London between 2005 and 2011.

Colin's PhD at Imperial College London between 2005 and 2009 was sponsored by ABB Turbo Systems. His thesis focused on the study of pulsating flow in a double-entry turbocharger turbine.

He has recently been awarded two 'Best Paper' prizes from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his work on double-entry turbocharger turbines.

Research

Colin's research interests currently centre on improving the understanding of the interaction between turbochargers and the internal combustion engine.

It is especially important to improve the ability to successfully model the turbocharger-engine interactions and include phenomena such as heat transfer and pulsating flow effects in the latest simulations.

Colin is also interested in technology pathways for improved heat recovery in future powerplants such as turbo-compounding and waste heat Rankin cycles.

He has and continues to work actively with industrial partners in these research areas.
