Dr Elies Dekoninck

BSc (Hons) PhD


Dr Elies Dekoninck is an Industrial Designer. Following a few years in industry, she went back to Brunel University and completed her PhD ‘Eco-innovation: tools to facilitate early-stage workshops’ in 2003, after which she worked as a consultant at Kinneir Dufort Product Design Ltd. in Bristol specialising in Design Strategy and User-centred design. She developed and delivered a portfolio of new consultancy services for clients such as Roche Diagnostics, Masterfoods and Unilever.

Elies then went freelance to pursue her research in eco-innovation. She worked on an EU funded project titled: ‘SUPPORT- Sustainable Innovation Tools’ and conducted consultancy for CREAX Innovation Consultants.

In February 2004, she joined the University of Bath to pursue her research interests in design methods, creativity and innovation and to teach Product Design and Development to Mechanical Engineering students. She is programme leader for the MEng in Advanced Design and Innovation.


Since joining the University she has become involved with: the Innovative Design and Manufacturing Research Centre (IdMRC) with projects on ‘Information and Creativity’; an industrially-based MPhil ‘Improving Innovation Using TRIZ’; an EPSRC Case award with ENVIRON UK ltd. ‘Eco-design, Eco-innovation and future moves towards corporate sustainability’; Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) with Foundrax UK, Bailey Caravans and Bath Institute of Medical Engineering.

She currently supervises PhD students looking at: User-Centred Eco-design; Creativity in Virtual Design teams; Creativity in the Latter stages of the Design Process. Currently she is involved in an EU-funded project: G.EN.ESI - Green ENgineering dESIgn and product sustainability.

She is a member of the Design Society and reviews for a series of international conferences including: DESIGN2006-2012 (Croatia), ICED conferences, Include, Engineering and Product Design Education (E&PDE). She also reviews for the Journal of Engineering Design and the Ergonomics journal.
