Dr Jonathan Luke du Bois

MEng PhD

Profile

Dr Jonathan du Bois is a lecturer in electromechanical engineering, specialising in dynamic systems.

Jonathan's primary research interests lie in active vibration control and hybrid testing, encompassing hydraulic and electromechanical actuation technologies, robot kinematics, modal analysis and adaptive control, with a strong focus on aerospace applications.

Jonathan obtained his Master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Bristol in 2002. In 2004 he returned to the University of Bristol to pursue a PhD in adaptive fuselage response suppression for rotorcraft.

Following a brief period as a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, San Diego in 2008, he returned to the University of Bristol to take up a postdoctoral position on the Rotor Embedded Active Control Technologies (REACT) programme with AgustaWestland Helicopters.

Upon completion of this post he was appointed as a Research Associate on the Autonomous Systems Technology Related Airborne Evaluation & Assessment (ASTRAEA) project, developing advanced test facilities for autonomous air-to-air refuelling systems with Cobham Mission Equipment.

Jonathan moved to the University of Bath in 2012 to take up a Lecturing position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Research

Jonathan's research interests lie in the field of dynamics, primarily in the areas of active vibration control and hybrid testing.

Active vibration control is increasingly used in a variety of applications from civil structures to transportation, and an area of particular interest for Jonathan has been that of rotorcraft vibration suppression. He is looking into embedded devices which can be used to create smart structures, and a key facet of this work is the adoption of energy recovery and storage techniques to create low-powered and self-sufficient classes of devices.

The modelling, testing and analysis of these devices and their host systems encompasses aspects of modal analysis, vibration testing, and adaptive and optimal control theory, and Jonathan takes an active interest in developing new methods in these areas.

Physical evaluation of novel components in large and complex systems can be carried out under laboratory conditions using hybrid testing, sometimes called model-in-the-loop or real-time dynamic substructuring. By coupling physical components to numerical simulations of larger systems it is possible to replicate the behaviour of the component as if it were integrated in the system.

Jonathan maintains an interest in these techniques to support the evaluation of his work on smart structures; the techniques cover hydraulic and electromagnetic actuation methodologies, ranging from high-fidelity 1 degree-of-freedom (DOF) interfaces to full 6DOF robot kinematics.
