Professor Ismet Gursul

Profile
Ismet Gursul is the Professor of Aerospace Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. His research covers experimental fluid mechanics, unsteady aerodynamics, vortex-dominated flows, micro air vehicles, and flow control.
Ismet studied for both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul before completing a PhD at the Lehigh University, USA in 1988.
He began working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California and went on to work as both an Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati.
He joined the University of Bath as a Reader in Aerospace Engineering in 1999 and became a Professor in 2004.
Ismet is a Fellor of the Royal Aeronautical Society and an Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
He is Associate Editor of both The Aeronautical Journal and Journal of Aerospace Science and Technology as well as being a member of the Aerodynamics National Advisory Committee (UK).

Research
The main research areas of the Aerodynamics Group at the University of Bath are unsteady aerodynamics and vortex-dominated flows. Professor Gursul’s research group has authored around 150 journal and conference papers. These include recent survey articles on unsteady vortex flows in Progress in Aerospace Sciences and Journal of Aircraft.
The Group’s work includes unsteady aerodynamics of aerofoils and wings in unsteady free stream, delta wing aerodynamics, buffeting and vortex breakdown, aircraft vortex wakes, flow control and synthetic jets, low Reynolds number aerodynamics, and fluid-structure interactions.
Current activities include unsteady aerodynamics of manoeuvring wings, low Reynolds number aerodynamics, flow-structure interactions on low aspect ratio wings, unsteady aerodynamics of membrane wings, and flexible oscillating foils near a free surface.
Recent research has been funded by EPSRC (GR/R07738/01, GR/S59383/01, EP/C015258/01, EP/F026099/1, the RCUK Academic Fellowship in Unmanned Air Vehicles), the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) (F61775-02-C4024, FA8655-06-1-3058, FA8655-07-1-3044, FA8655-10-1-3093), the US Office of Naval Research (ONR) (N62909-10-1-7117), EC 6th Framework (FAR-WAKE), and industry (Qinetiq, BAE Systems, DERA).
Professor Gursul was a co-organizer of the international “Workshop on Aerodynamic Issues of Unmanned Air Vehicles”, held at the University of Bath in 2002, and currently is an associate editor for the Aeronautical Journal, Journal of Aerospace Science and Technology, and Encyclopaedia of Aerospace Engineering.
