BSc MSc FIPEM CSci

Profile

Tony Miles is Professor of Biomechanics and Director of the Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics. His research area in Biomechanics and Biomaterials relating to orthopaedic implants associated with total joint replacement and fracture treatment.

Tony was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town where he subsequently joined the staff becoming a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bath in 1986 as a Lecturer in Design and was promoted to a Personal Chair in Dec 2000.  Tony was Head of Department between April 2011 and July 2015 and is now Head of the Design and Manufacturing Group.

Research

Tony Miles research is in the fields of Orthopaedic Biomechanics and Biomaterials. His research is primarily focused on the development of experimental research tools for evaluating the performance of orthopaedic implants used in total joint replacement and fracture treatment. He has also extensive experience in various aspects of fixation of orthopaedic implants.

He has also been involved in the development of biomaterials for augmentation and/or replacement of bone stock associated with impaction grafting used in revision total joint replacement and injectable biomaterials used in bone screw augmentation and vertebral body fractures. He has a developing interest in kinematics of the natural and total knee replacements.
