Profile
Emeritus Professor Mike Owen's research has been concerned principally with theoretical and experimental modelling of heat transfer and fluid flow inside air cooled gas turbines, particularly the flow near rotating compressor and turbine discs.
This research has included the development of theoretical models of rotating-disc systems and the design of many rigs to simulate conditions inside gas turbine rotors.
Mike's research has been sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Ministry of Defence in the UK as well as by the EU and a number of British and overseas companies including Alstom, BMW-Rolls Royce, European Gas Turbines, MTU, Rolls-Royce, Ruston Gas Turbines, Siemens, and Sulzer.
As well as being invited to present papers and to chair sessions at international conferences, Mike has also given invited lectures on the modelling of rotating-disc systems at universities and gas-turbine manufacturers in Europe, USA, China, Japan and Malaysia.
He has co-authored two research monographs and over 100 papers on flow and heat transfer in rotating-disc systems: several papers have won prizes, including two recent 'Best Paper' awards from the Heat Transfer Committee of the International Gas Turbine Institute.
Research
Research interests include theoretical, computational and experimental fluid dynamics and heat transfer in rotating flows, with particular application to internal air systems in gas turbine engines.
