Dr Elise Pegg

Dr Elise Pegg's fascination with biomaterials and the implant-tissue interface began during her studies at the University of Nottingham. Her PhD thesis examined the peptide functionalisation of titanium to improve implant integration and was sponsored by Smith & Nephew.

After graduating, Elise worked for three years as a Research Engineer at Biomet, an orthopaedic manufacturer.  She returned to academia in 2010 as a postdoctoral researcher in orthopaedic biomechanics at the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences.

Elise was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2015.

  • PhD in Medical Materials Science, University of Nottingham, 2007

  • Biomaterials for medical device applications
  • Tailoring the properties of Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)
  • Knee and hip biomechanics
  • Novel image processing algorithms to identify features within medical scans
  • Optimising medical device and surgical instrumentation design
