Profile

Mike Wilson is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department. His research involves the computation of internal flow and heat transfer, mainly for rotating disc systems relevant to the internal cooling air systems used in gas turbine engines.

Dr Wilson obtained a BSc (Hons) in Pure Mathematics at the University of Bath in 1982 and a PhD in Engineering at the University in 1986. He is currently Director of Studies for postgraduate taught programmes in Mechanical Engineering.

Research

Dr Wilson has conducted and supervised computational research into turbine-disc cooling and rotating flow at Bath since 1989. He has been involved with technology transfer between the University and industry in the form of a Royal Academy of Engineering industrial secondment (to European Gas Turbines Ltd) and as an academic supervisor in a series of TSB-funded Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.

His research has included the application and validation of in-house and commercial codes to the flow and heat transfer in generic models of gas-turbine internal cooling air systems.

He has also collaborated with IRPHE, Marseille, and the Tokyo University of Science on the application to rotating flows of anisotropic models of turbulence and more direct methods of simulation, as part of joint projects supported by Royal Society exchange programmes.
