People you should know
Academic representative
Students who you elect to represent you on your programme. Academic reps gather your opinions and raise issues at departmental Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) meetings. You should speak to your academic rep if you have any concerns or feedback about your programme. They also take part in Students' Union Academic Council meetings to discuss University-wide issues.
Dean
The academic leader of your Faculty/School who is responsible for effective leadership, management and development within the framework of the University's mission and strategic direction.
Director of Studies
Each degree programme has a Director of Studies who is responsible for coordinating teaching and assessment and dealing with individual student progress. You should speak to your Director of Studies if you are concerned about any aspect of your studies
Faculty/School representative
Faculty/School representatives gather the wider views of the student population through liaising with academic representatives. They report to the student Academic Executive Committee, Faculty Boards of Studies and Faculty Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee.
Head of department
The academic leader of your department who is responsible for the management of all taught programmes and research.
Lecturer
An academic member of staff.
Peer mentor
Peer mentors are current students who can offer you practical help and advice, including directing you to support services, and sharing their experience of being a student at the University of Bath.
Personal tutor
An academic member of staff who supports your academic and personal development. You can ask your personal tutor for a reference when applying for jobs or postgraduate studies.
Placements officer/tutor/manager
Responsible for supporting you through the placement recruitment process. They are also responsible for the administrative and pastoral elements of the placement itself, including evaluation.
Professor
The most senior academic grade in the University.
Programme administrator
Responsible for the administration of your degree programme.
Resident tutor
Members of staff or postgraduate students who provide support in University accommodation. Talk to them if you have any concerns about your accommodation or housemates, or for general advice and information.
Students' Union officer
Students who you elect to run the Students' Union. They are responsible for the strategic direction of the Union, as well as for representing the University, nationally and internationally.
