Free public lecture: Discover Bath’s Museum of East Asian Art

Local people have the chance to hear about Bath’s Museum of East Asian Art, described as one of the most unique art collections in England, in a free public lecture at the University of Bath.

Ailsa Laxton, curator of the museum, will explain the museum’s history and describe its extensive art collection in a lecture on 28 February at 5.15pm.

The museum was founded in 1993 by Brian McElney OBE to house his personal collection of East Asian art, acquired during his legal career in Hong Kong. Mr McElney works at the museum each day, sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge for the collection.

The range of art exhibited at the museum, which includes ceramics, jades and bronzes, comprises nearly 2,000 objects and is one of the most extensive collections of East Asian art outside London.

“The museum has a loyal local following, as well as attracting the attention of students, scholars and tourists, but we’re sure that many people in Bath just don’t know that these exquisite collections are here,” said Ms Laxton.

“We have one of the most comprehensive jade collections in the UK and some of the finest bamboo carvings in Europe. We have lively and innovative exhibits which give visitors a wonderful insight into the art, craftsmanship and cultures of China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia.”

Ms Laxton has been curator of the museum for three and a half years. She read Chinese and History of Asian Art at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and has worked at Sotheby's and the British Museum.

Admission for the lecture is free and people can just turn up on the evening. Free parking is available in the West Car Park. The lecture runs from 5.15pm until 6.15pm in the lecture hall 8 West 1.1 on the Claverton campus.
