Workshop to help adults return to learning

Local people are invited to a free five-day workshop to explore the idea of returning to learning as an adult.

The Creative Arts & Advice week combines practical guidance and information with confidence boosting art sessions for people who have no experience of higher or further education and are aged over 21.

The event is run by the University of Bath at Carpenter House in Broad Quay, Bath from 11-15 May, during Adult Learners’ Week.

“The Creative Arts & Advice week is a unique opportunity for adults who are considering returning to education, but may lack confidence to make the change. In today’s economic climate adult learning can be an excellent route to opening new career options,” said Anne Olesen, Broadening Participation Officer in the University’s Division for Lifelong Learning.

The advice and information sessions will give the opportunity to discuss options and issues in an informal and supportive setting, and to put together an individual action plan.

Current adult learners will be on-hand to answer questions and share their experiences, including Matthew Davis from Twerton in Bath who returned to learning at the age of 28, swapping landscape gardening for IT.

“I wanted to get a career up together and I’d always fancied studying for a degree,” said Matthew.

“I’m in my second year at Bath College studying IT and I’m really enjoying it. It was hard initially getting back into the routine of studying and learning but it all comes together. As long as it’s something you’re interested in I’d definitely encourage people to give it a go.”

Art sessions will be led by professional artists to encourage people to have a go at new activities and recognise their own abilities and potential.
