Public lecture: using academic expertise in public policy-making

The way in which government uses academic research expertise to inform public policy will be discussed at a free public lecture at the University of Bath (Wednesday 27 May).

Professor Dame Janet Finch DBE, Vice-Chancellor of Keele University, will assess how well government is able to access research expertise, or whether it should ask for and expect more input from academics.

Professor Finch will question how academics should respond to this. If there are barriers or pitfalls, can these be overcome? Are changes occurring in the UK which encourage a closer alignment between academics and government policy-making?

The lecture, entitled Academics and public policy: a new alignment? will use recent examples of the UK government’s approach to drawing on academic expertise. This will include How academia and government can work together, a report produced by the Council for Science and Technology, which Professor Finch co-chairs.

Professor Finch is a British sociologist and academic administrator. She is Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Social Relations at Keele University, Staffordshire.

The lecture will be held at 6.15pm in 8W 3.22 at the Claverton campus. Admission is free, to reserve a ticket please contact Stephanie Marshall, Events & Ceremonies Office on 01225 383659 or email s.j.a.marshall@bath.ac.uk
