Planning go-ahead for new East Building

Martyn Whalley, Director of Estates is pleased to report that at the planning meeting of Bath and North East Somerset on Wednesday (10 June) the new East Building received unanimous approval from the Planning Committee.

The building will act as a decant facility to allow refurbishment of buildings on the Parade like 1 West, it will also include a 355 seater lecture theatre, and GTA spaces.

The proposed building is currently out to tender with returns on 19 June from local national contractors. The building will target BREEAM excellent and will include the 'Termodeck' concrete cool flooring system, solar water heating, and photo voltaics.

The architect is Architect Design Partnership of Yeovil, with Project Management by King Sturge. Updated details of the scheme are being posted on the Estates web site in the next few days and the construction is expected to start in August or September.

Mr Whalley said: "This scheme allows the University to plan and accelerate the regeneration and refurbishment of the existing building stock. The 4 West project, which includes refurbishment of part of the original building, has demonstrated that the original 1970's buildings can be designed to a level which can achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. This building will be pivotal in delivering the University's objectives relating to the Estate."
