Creative summer schools for secondary school pupils in Wiltshire and B&NES

Have you ever fancied learning how to shoot video? Or do you think you have what it takes to become a Video Jockey?

Well this summer could be the time to do it.

The University of Bath’s Division for Lifelong Learning is running two free workshops as part of its Creative Arts Weeks programme.

Creative Arts Weeks are targeted at secondary school pupils in Swindon and Wiltshire and aim to raise aspirations, build confidence, raise awareness about educational opportunities and increase participation in Higher Education.

Gavin Howard, fresh from last summer’s very successful ‘Hollywood Special Effects’ workshop, will lead the fast and furious Shooting Video Workshop, 27-31 July and Clinton Osborne will lead on the Creative VJ’ing Workshop, 3-7 August.

Both workshops will be held at Swindon College.

The first, is aimed at secondary school pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 and the students will learn technical skills as well as creative skills involved in shooting a video.

The second workshop is for students in Years 9, 10 and 11 and runs from 3–7 August and the students will learn basic VJ’ing techniques and be allowed to create, experiment and play. They will work with professional and experienced Video Jockeys, and learn about the hardware and software involved and build their own performance.

Anne Olesen, from the University of Bath, said: “The Creative Arts Weeks are all about bringing young people through the doors of one of our partner further education colleges. By immersing them in a weeklong creative workshop we aim to build their confidence and give them new skills, not only technical and creative, but also social.”

“It also makes them think about staying in education after they leave secondary school and makes them aware of the educational options available to them.”
