New footballing role for Ged Roddy MBE

The Football Premier League has today (Thursday 30 July) announced the appointment of Ged Roddy MBE as its new Director of Youth.

Ged, who is the Director of Sport for the University and has worked here since 1992, is due to take up his new post in October 2009.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Glynis Breakwell said: “We would like to wish Ged every success in his new role as Director of Youth for the Barclays Premier League.

“Over the last 17 years, Ged has been instrumental in establishing the University’s reputation as one of the leading sport universities in the UK.

“He has helped us to secure £35 million investment in sports facilities on campus, and has created an outstanding sports environment that has benefited numerous international athletes as well as our students, staff and local community.

“Ged is leaving us a strong platform to build on for the future, particularly as we look forward to the London Olympics in 2012.”

During his time at the University, Ged has overseen many events and initiatives including:

  • hosting the European Youth Olympics in 1995;
  • the creation of the TeamBath concept that includes 16 elite training squads;
  • the opening of the multi-million pound sports training village complex in 2004;
  • and more recently the University’s joint hosting of the UK School Games in 2008.
