Robot Fish makes a splash on TV

The Robot fish, known as ‘Gymnobot’, has been making waves in the media world since its press release on 22 September.

The research was led by Dr William Megill, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and postgraduate students Keri Collins and Ryan Ladd.

The design is inspired by the Amazonian knife fish and could help to film and study the diverse marine life near the seashore where conventional submersible robots cannot go.

Gymnobot also made an appearance on ITV West’s lunchtime bulletin using the University’s own video footage.

The first “swim” of the Gymnobot was featured in the Discovery Channel Canada’s Daily Planet programme on 21 October.
