University of Bath gives a warm welcome to students from its partner institution in India

The University is delighted to welcome its first cohort of students on to our new MSc in Industrial Biotechnology Enterprise, a joint Masters programme with St Xaviers College, Mumbai, funded by the UK-India Education & Research Initiative (UKIERI).

The students started their programme in India in June and will study at Bath from September 2009 until January 2010 in the Department of Biology & Biochemistry.

This collaborative programme was developed following a huge demand from the Indian biotech organisations for new employees with the right ’soft’ skills for industry.

The two collaborating institutions bring their complementary strengths and expertise to this multidisciplinary programme in biotechnology and business, designed for students with enthusiasm for enterprise and who intend to pursue a career at the interface of technology and commerce.

Key features include:

  • Links with industry whereby students will spend a 20-week assessed placement in biotechnology companies in India, working on specific research needs identified by the sector.
  • Eminent entrepreneurs and leading industry experts in UK and Indian biotechnology, who have strong research links with academics in both institutions, involved in programme delivery.

The Director of Studies, Dr Momna Hejmadi, who originally comes from Mumbai, has been instrumental in driving forward innovative learning and teaching strategies in the institution.

Dr Hejmadi said: “We’re really excited to be involved in this international collaboration with our colleagues in India. Funding through UKIERI is really important to get innovative programmes off the ground and we are hoping this will develop into a major collaborations in the future.”
