Dr Steve Wharton has been elected as Chair of Academic Assembly until 31 July 2012.
Academic Assembly meets twice per year; the dates for this academic year are:
- Wednesday 14 October 2009
- Tuesday 11 May 2010.
The Assembly is the statutory body representing the interests of academic members of the University and those in the Education and Research job family. These include the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellors, the University Librarian and holders of such other posts in the University and such other members of the University as may be designated by the Senate.
The Chair of Academic Assembly is an ex officio member of Court, Council, Senate, Nominations Committee, Convocation, and Academic Staff Appeals Committee.
Steve says: “Academic Assembly has an important statutory function in the participative governance of the University of which we are all members.
“As Chair it is my intention to engage with that responsibility. I shall serve and represent the members of Academic Assembly to the best of my abilities, and to that end I invite all members to contact me on issues of concern.
“I’d encourage members to attend the meetings of Academic Assembly in order to give greater weight to what is said on your behalf as I represent you across the University.”
Steve Wharton joined the University in 1990 in the Department of European Studies & Modern Languages.
He has previously served on Court, Council and Senate and a number of their committees; on the Humanities & Social Sciences Faculty Board of Studies; has been Director of Studies for IMML; and was Faculty Orator for four years.
He is currently Honorary Secretary of the Association for the Study of Modern & Contemporary France, and has served on the Higher Education Research Forum for England and the Advisory Committee of USS.
