Last Saturday, the University held its annual celebration – Charter Day – to recognise all those who have so generously made gifts to the University during the past year.
More than 1,000 alumni, friends, former staff, companies and charitable trusts were invited, all of whom supported the University in 2008-9.
Charter Day is named in commemoration of the founding of the University 43 years ago.
Dr Alex Kelle opened the day with a lecture on ‘Cure or weapon? Towards a new ethics of biological research.’ A Campus TV short film followed and included interviews with scholars and other recipients of philanthropic gifts.
Around 120 donors and their guests and, for the first time, friends and family of this year’s scholars, attended the Scholarships Ceremony that followed.

The Vice-Chancellor with this year's scholars
The Vice-Chancellor congratulated the 49 undergraduates and postgraduates on their achievements and presented them with their certificates. These scholars are the direct result of philanthropic support to the University, and the guests enjoyed talking to them over lunch, seeing how their support has benefited them.
The day finished with tours of campus, but not before nine of the University’s most significant donors had been welcomed into the Dean’s Roll of Honour. Membership of the Roll is awarded to those whose gifts have made a real and lasting impact on the institution, its staff and students.
Our continued thanks go to all those who support the University in this way; their gifts allow us to attract and retain the best and brightest students, regardless of their financial background.
