The University of Bath has appointed Professor Bernard Morley as its new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning & Teaching.

Professor Morley, who is currently Director of the Graduate School of Life Sciences & Medicine at Imperial College in London, will take up his new appointment on 1 March 2010.

He will replace Professor Ian Jamieson who is retiring in December after 24 years of service with the University - the last six of which have been as its Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Morley was educated at Liverpool and Oxford Universities and has held appointments at the University of California, MRC at Oxford University, and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School before joining Imperial as a Senior Lecturer in Molecular Rheumatology in 1997 when the RPMS and Imperial College merged.

He has been the Director of the Graduate School of Life Sciences & Medicine since 2006 and is responsible for all higher degree programmes in the Faculty of Medicine and the Division of Life Sciences.

Speaking of his appointment Professor Morley said: “I am delighted to be joining one of the UK’s leading universities.

“This is an exciting and challenging time for the higher education sector. I am looking forward to playing a key role in shaping the University’s future strategic direction.

“Bath already has an outstanding reputation in terms of the experience and education it offers its students, and I am looking forward to building on this in the future.”

As Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning & Teaching, Professor Morley will have overall responsibility for the University’s academic strategy, specifically including all matters relating to learning and teaching. He will chair the University’s Learning & Teaching Committee and the Management Committee of the Initial Professional Development programme for new lecturers.

Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, said: “We are delighted to have appointed Professor Morley to this key role at the University.
