University of Bath participates in celebration of Japanese university’s anniversary

Maggie Ward Goodbody, Director of the English Language Centre, was an invited guest representing the University of Bath at Fukuoka University’s 75th anniversary celebrations from 22 to 24 October 2009.

Alongside representatives from 18 other universities from the USA, Asia and Europe, including the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds, Ms Ward Goodbody attended the University President’s symposium on 'Universities’ global alliance and mission', and subsequent panel discussion.

She also gave a talk to members of the English Department on the topic of ‘Language learning: Motivation and success’.

The University of Bath’s relationship with Fukuoka University has been forged through a longstanding partnership between Bath’s English Language Centre and Fukuoka’s Department of English.

Each summer since 1997 a group of 24 students from Fukuoka have come to Bath’s English Language Centre for a successful and popular tailor-made English Language & Culture course.

While in Japan Ms Ward Goodbody visited other universities with which the English Language Centre has links, namely Kobe International University, Ryukoku University, University of the Sacred Heart and Tokyo International University.
